A man found with crack cocaine on a Dublin street has been jailed after a judge described the drug as "hideous".
Stephen Carlisle, 41, of Cleggan Avenue, Ballyfermot, pleaded guilty to possession of crack cocaine on February 21, 2025.
Judge John Hughes sentenced Carlisle to seven months in prison, with a further two months suspended.
Dublin District Court heard that gardaí on patrol at Bishop Street, Dublin 8, saw a large gathering in the doorway of a building and approached. Carlisle was among the group and was found in possession of crack cocaine valued at €363 when searched.
The court heard that Carlisle had 56 previous convictions.
Defence solicitor Tony Collier said his client had descended into a very serious crack cocaine addiction at the time of the offence.
It was accepted that the drugs were for Carlisle's own use, although the quantity was above the threshold that would usually be associated with immediate personal consumption in sale or supply cases.
Judge Hughes said he regarded the nature of the drug itself as an aggravating factor and remarked that "crack cocaine is a hideous drug".
The judge added that Carlisle knew that only too well.
