Jason Murphy, also known as Jason Hutch, has been remanded in custody after being extradited from Spain to face an organised crime charge. Our criminal defence solicitors represent clients at every stage of criminal proceedings, from Garda station advice through District Court hearings.
The 37-year-old, of The Paddocks, Clontarf, Dublin, appeared before a special sitting of Dublin District Court after being returned from Lanzarote on the Government jet.
The court heard that Murphy had been in custody in Spain since April after his arrest on foot of a European Arrest Warrant issued by the Irish High Court.
Detective Sergeant Robert Madden of the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. He told the court that Murphy was arrested at Casement Aerodrome after his return to Ireland and brought to Clondalkin Garda Station.
Murphy faces a charge of facilitating the activities of a criminal organisation between April 12, 2016 and September 29, 2021, at locations unknown while he was an Irish citizen residing in Lanzarote.
The court heard that he made no reply when charged and cautioned.
There was no bail application before the District Court, as bail on the organised crime charge can only be sought in the High Court.
Murphy was not legally represented at the court hearing, although the court was told that he had a legal consultation before appearing. When asked about representation, he said he had wanted Ferrys Solicitors to act for him but had not been able to instruct the firm because of the ongoing solicitors' strike.
Judge Conor Fottrell remanded Murphy in custody to appear again by video link before Cloverhill District Court on September 17.
The accused has not yet indicated a plea. The allegations remain before the courts and no findings have been made.
