A drug conviction can certainly affect your career particularly if your career choice requires Garda Vetting which will disclose a conviction to your prospective employer.
Cooperate fully with the Garda but do not make any admission or agree to sign an admission in the garda notebook.
Yes Gardai can search you if they reasonably suspect that you are in possession of drugs. Gardai do not have a general power of stop and search. They must have reasonable suspicion before commencing a search.
A drugs conviction can adversely affect your ability to travel to some countries. It can also affect your ability to obtain working visas and other travel visas. In particular countries such as USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia can prevent your entry on the basis of a previous drugs conviction.
Section 15 + S15A of the Misuse of Drugs Act creates the criminal offence of sale and Supply of Drugs. A S15A charge relates to possession of drugs over the value of €13,000. This offence carries a mandatory sentence of 10 years imprisonment.
From 1 September 2026, Gardaí may refer an eligible adult first-time offender found with a small quantity of drugs for personal use to the HSE, instead of prosecuting or issuing an adult caution. The person must admit possession and agree to take part. It is not automatic, and drugs have not been decriminalised. See our full explainer on the Health Referral Scheme.
